چکیده

This paper presents an acoustic study of voiceless fricatives in the Temirgoy dialect of the Adyghe language (North West Caucasian, Circassian). The Circassian languages are well-known for their large consonant inventories. Using data gathered on a field trip to the Caucasus, the analysis focusses on three acoustic properties: centre of gravity, standard deviation and general slope pattern. Results show that while most fricative pairs can be reliably distinguished via centre of gravity alone, the spectral characteristics of some pairs (most notably /S, Sj/, /ŝw, Xw/ and /è, X(w)/) are highly similar. For the typologically rare closed postalveolar fricatives /ŝ, ŝw/, both centre of gravity and standard deviation were found to be decisive acoustic cues.

An Acoustic Study of English and Thai Fricatives Produced by Thai Speakers

This paper explores the acoustic characteristics of English and Thai fricatives, uttered by native-Thai speakers. In the phonological systems, English has four pairs of voiceless-voiced fricatives, which appear initially, intervocalically, and finally. Thai, on the other hand, has only two initial voiceless fricatives. The results of this acoustic study revealed that the major acoustic cues of ...

Acoustic and perceptual properties of English fricatives

This study presents a comparative analysis of acoustic and perceptual cues to place of articulation in English fricatives. Acoustic parameters investigated include spectral peak location, spectral moments, locus equations, F2 onset, overall noise amplitude, relative amplitude, and fricative noise duration. Perception data were collected for isolated fricatives and fricativevowel syllables. The ...

Acoustic analysis of a speech corpus of european portuguese fricative consonants

The study of Portuguese fricatives is a complex problem, which has not been explored fully. As part of a larger study of the acoustic properties of Portuguese fricatives, corpora of Portuguese words containing /f, v, s, z, A, O/, nonsense words with Portuguese phonology, and sustained Portuguese fricatives have been recorded and analysed. Results show that more than half of the voiced fricative...

Mehri ejective fricatives: An acoustic study

Ejective consonants are not very common crosslinguistically. Even less common is the occurrence of ejective fricatives. This infrequency is generally attributed to the incompatibility of two aerodynamic requirements: a continuing flow of air to create noise frication and an increasing intraoral air pressure to implement ejectivity. This study reports on an acoustic investigation of initial and ...

Aspiration in alveolar fricatives in Bodo

Aspirated fricatives are typologically rare in world’s languages, occurring mostly in the Sino–Tibetan languages. However, they are hitherto unreported in the Tibeto–Burman languages spoken in North–East India. In this study we present data from Bodo, a Tibeto–Burman language spoken in Assam, India and argue that the Bodo voiceless alveolar fricative is an aspirated voiceless alveolar fricative...
